Where Coastal Heritage Meets Untamed Adventure.

Nestled beside the historic Western Head Lighthouse, Surf Western Head Resort shares a piece of Nova Scotia’s storied coastal past.

Western Head lighthouse

This striking lighthouse, built in 1962, stands on a point that has guided mariners for generations, with a foghorn first installed in 1924 to mark the western approach to Liverpool Bay. Rising 19.5 meters, the iconic white and red structure stands watch over the Atlantic, a symbol of the region’s seafaring heritage and the powerful natural forces that shape this rugged coastline.

The original fog alarm, installed by Boehner’s Ltd., was so potent that it rattled dishes in the nearby homes, creating an unforgettable presence in the local community. This foghorn and the keepers who tended it—like Lemuel Moreau, the last of Western Head’s keepers—symbolize the dedication and pride of lighthouse keepers who served these shores for decades, maintaining the station until automated systems took over in the late 1980s.

Today, only the lighthouse tower remains as a reminder of this maritime legacy, quietly illuminating the entrance to the harbor, while our resort embraces the same tranquility, natural beauty, and historical charm that make Western Head a cherished part of Nova Scotia.
